Both Rosen and Walker are excited to be a part of Hanukkah at the Village to celebrate the intersection of their queer and Jewish identities. Gold describes Rosen and Walker as a “local rabbi dream team” - they’re the first conservative Jewish rabbis in the world to have a same-sex marriage. On top of klezmer music and sufganiyot, the outdoor event will include a candle lighting ceremony by Rabbi Ariella Rosen and Rabbi Becca Walker. LGBTQ+ at the J is also doing its first partnership with the Church-Wellesley Village BIA to host Hanukkah at the Village on Dec. “With this event, we’re hoping to bring light back into people’s lives and a sense of reconnecting.” “Something that Hanukkah celebrates is light out of darkness we’ve had two years now of darkness and our lights have been dimmed due to COVID,” Münster said. Though the 8 Gays of Hanukkah will focus more on showcasing queer talent rather than religion, but Münster says the spirit of Hanukkah will be alive nonetheless.
To Münster, this is a sign that Toronto’s queer Jewish community is getting the visibility it deserves. “Bringing people together in person is going to facilitate a type of connection that we just couldn’t achieve virtually.” 5 at the Comedy Bar in Toronto, after having to host the show online last year.
Münster is looking forward to this year’s sold-out show, happening in person on Dec. Gila Münster, a drag queen based in Toronto, has hosted the event since 2019. The seven Hanukkah events LGBTQ+ at the J is promoting includes a latke-making workshop hosted on Zoom, a virtual zine-making workshop and the third annual 8 Gays of Hanukkah drag show. “It’s an exciting year for queer-centred Hanukkah events in the community.” “There’s something about this year - there’s sort of a critical mass happening,” Gold said. LGBTQ+ at the J, a community building program from the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (JCC), is promoting the most queer-centric Hanukkah events since its inception over three years ago, says Cara Gold, the manager of Jewish community development at Miles Nadal JCC. Many Torontonians are going to have a very queer Hanukkah this year, from candle lighting at the Village to a sold-out drag show.
